As part its Programme of Community Action in the field of Public Health (2003-08), the Commission (DG Sanco) presented its work plan for 2005 on 14 January. The priority areas remain unchanged from last year, namely: the improvement of health information and knowledge, the rapid response to health threats, and the tackling health determinants. The total budget of the work plan for this year is €61.5 millions.
Also new in 2005, a budget line was created to support capacity building of existing networks (point 2.3.6 in the work plan). On a short-term basis, the Commission could provide support to established networks with objectives meeting those of the work plan (extension to new Member States, data collection etc…). Such networks should represent a large number of countries, contribute to tackling issues where a gap exists and have a clear EU added-value.
