Italy's fifth genital awareness week for men

The fifth Andrology Prevention week, organised by the Italian Society of Andrology (SIA) took place 21-26 November and featured free visits to an andrologist.

The objective was to encourage men to take more attention about their own health, in particular about their reproductive and sexual health by developing direct contacts with andrologists.

The 2005 week included 150 specialised centres across the country. In the previous weeks, 204 centres, 300 specialists and approximately 20.000 patients had been involved. Professor Vincenzo Gentile, SIA President said that, thanks to this initiative, ‘many problems of the male genital apparatus, which could not have been detected otherwise, have been diagnosed’.

Disorders of the genital apparatus can be the symptoms of a series of other pathologies such diabetes, hypertension or depression. The SIA underlines the importance of serious and structured information and prevention initiatives targeted at men. It is essential to take into account male needs and worries when they face a problem that limits their well-being, they say.

The data gathered during the four first weeks revealed that more than 20.000 men between the 20 and 70 years sought advice during the event. In 5.6% of those under 40 years, testicular anomalies were detected, and in 28.2% varicocele (an abnormal expansion of the veins that drain the blood to the testicle) was diagnosed.
