Scotland, which has one of Europe’s highest rates of mortality from cirrhosis of the liver, also has a stark gender divide when it comes to alcohol abuse.
A study by Dr Carol Emslie of the Medical Research Council's Social and Public Health Sciences Unit and Dr Richard Mitchell, of the University of Glasgow's Public Health department found that more than twice as many men die every year in Scotland from alcohol misuse as women.
Every year, 999 Scottish men and 448 women die from the health consequences of alcohol-abuse giving a male death rate from alcohol of 38 deaths per 100,000 and a female rate of 16. Most of the 25 areas with very high alcohol-related death rates are in Greater Glasgow although rural areas in the Highlands also featured.
The Scottish Government is about to publish a new strategic plan for tackling alcohol misuse.
