Dr Siegfried Meryn was born and raised in Vienna, Austria, where he graduated from high-school "cum laude" and entered medical school at the University of Vienna in 1972. He graduated with a M.D. degree "cum laude". After a year of rotating internship at the General Hospital, University of Vienna, he completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Vienna. He also took subspecialty fellowships outside of Austria, in Birmingham, GB, under Prof. Dr. Sir A. Williams, (intestinal diseases) and under Dame Sheila Sherlock, Kings College, London, GB, (diseases of the liver).
Between 1982 - 1984, he worked as a research fellow at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, N.Y., Department of Clinical Sciences, headed by Nobel-laureate Dr. R.S. Yalow, and at the Berson Laboratory, Veterans Administration, New York.
After being appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Vienna, Siegfried served as consultant in therapeutic and interventional endoscopy and liver transplantation at the University of Vienna. In 1986, he became medical consultant of the United Nations, Vienna (UNIDO). In 1987, he was appointed Associate Professor of Medicine at the Medical School of the University of Vienna.
In 1988, Siegfried was appointed Medical Director and Chairman of the prestigious Neue Wiener Privatklinik in Vienna. As a result of his leadership, the Neue Wiener Privatklinik now ranks among Austria's leading hospitals.
In the course of his career, Siegfried has received innumerable honors from peers and medical societies. He chairs the International Gastro Surgical Club, National Chapter, Austria and many other societies and is co-editor of several medical journals, inclusive of Hepatogastroenterology. Among his many awards were the Friedrich Wewalka prize, Max Kade Foundation Award and Grant, the Kuner scholarship, and others.
Dr. Meryn is the author of two books, his extensive research has led to over 150 publications, over 100 peer reviewed, in national and international journals.
Currently, Dr. Meryn also holds the title of scientific president of Update, the Vienna International Society for Medical Education, chairman of the Memory Clinic, Vienna and chairman of the Osteology-Osteoporosis Clinic, Vienna.
